Union College’s Department of Visual Arts in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural Affairs are happy to announce the opening of “Reality of Placement,” an exhibition of contemporary Latin American art on view from September 23- November 22, 3013. An exhibition reception will be held at 5pm on October 3, 2013 in the gallery followed by a four artists panel at 6:00pm in room 215 located on the second floor of the Visual Arts building, directly above the gallery.
Organized by M&B Latin American and Contemporary Art Projects, “Reality of Placement” addresses the conditions and circumstances that are relevant to the experiences of migration globally and the people, ideas and objects that pass from one culture to another. The artists suggest a sense of documentation, fiction or non-fiction, creating a conglomerate of clues that never completely stop sending information. The artists in the show weave connections between past and present, a form that stipulates its own shifting terms, constantly renewing and differentiating meaning from one moment to another. Some of the artists are acutely aware that they are trying to capture a moment that is quickly turning into a documented journey of their own migration situation.
“Reality of placement” presents artists who have a long term relationship with their subjects and who use various mediums to break down the barriers of neighborhood, family, and identity and seek to address the spaces that emerge in-between them. The exhibiting artists addresses the call for a rational and creative interpretation on the action of human migration and exile that presents particular perspectives achieved throughout various genres and media including painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, mixed media, installation and printmaking.

“Carlos Barberena’s sensibility of his created forms, coupled with use of elements, create movement that invites viewers to activate their visual and emotional perceptions. His Gaze serving position throughout visually in unison and his hand responds to that, abstracting glare and coordinates. The multiplicity of signs on their production is related to a background lysergic, where he tries to give an answer to almost organic means and supports contemporaries’ creations. Formal investigation and conceptual works which, although three-dimensional product approaches are diametrically opposed. Barberena’s analytical possibilities rooted in a deep understanding of the material in its deployment space, shows several dimensional achievements, accompanied by conceptual ideas, a preparatory work originating from his imprint of love and experimental paradigms”
